Boyd is a Scrooge-like money-lender who capriciously sacks his impoverished clerk, Abel Death, and is found a week later strangled in his bed. Abel is missing, Boyd's estranged son Reginald was the last to see his father, and Lady Wharton claims to have spoken to the dead man days after his death. As suspicions swirl around Abel Death and Reginald, his fiance's cousin Dick and plucky Gracie Death team up to find the real murderer. Farjeon likes to make liberal use of quoted newspaper stories for his exposition, and this book is no exception.
