Under Fire was one of the first novels to be written about World War I, and is based on Barbusse's own experiences fighting on the Western Front. It is especially realistic in its depictions of the trench conditions and fighting.

Author's Biography

Henri Barbusse (1873 - 1935) was a French novelist and a member of the French Communist Party. He was greatly influenced by the political events of his time, such as the Russian Revolution, and one of his goals in writing was to define a proletarian literature.
