The plot tells the story of a young recruit during the American Civil War. He is scared of the war initially and for that he is shameful. Later he overcomes his troubles to become a hero on the battlefield. The author was born after the war and had not at the time experienced any battle. Despite this the novel is known for its realist description of the war.

Author's Biography

Stephen Crane (1871 – 1900) was an American novelist, short story writer, poet and journalist. He died at an early age. Despite that he was a prolific writer and recognized as one of the most innovative writers of his generation.
